Based out of the small village of Kyzyl-Tuu on Issyk-Kul’s southern shore, Kulbar and her family have managed to turn two of the family’s four small businesses into international successes.     THE TRANSITION OF AN ENTREPRENEUR IN BALYKCHY

    In 2005, fourteen years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Taalaikul Usunbakunova used microloans to transform herself from cafe waitress to successful entrepreneur.
    In the town of Balykchy, on the northwestern shore of Lake Issyk Kul, Taalaikul operates a small business salting and smoking fish caught in the lake and selling them in the town’s outdoor markets.
