BANK KOMPANION. WHEN KINDNESS BECOMES A LEGACY: THE STORY OF SALY KARIMOV
BANK KOMPANION. WHEN KINDNESS BECOMES A LEGACY: THE STORY OF SALY KARIMOV
Saly Karimov is an Honored Educator of the Kyrgyz Republic, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, and Professor.
His academic works are recognized far beyond the country. Among the most notable are “The Asymptotic Behavior of Solutions to a System of Differential Equations with a Small Parameter at Derivatives” (1975) and “Asymptotics of Solutions of Certain Classes of Differential Equations with a Small Parameter in the Case of Changing Stability of an Equilibrium Point in the Plane of Fast Motions” (1982).
Yet behind these rigorous formulas stands a man who has always believed not only in science, but in the strength of the human heart.
His story is not just about a professor devoted to education — it is about a person who, even at ninety, continues to change the lives of others quietly, consistently, and without seeking recognition.
We met Professor Saly Karimov to talk about what it means to be a teacher, why he decided to create his own scholarship for students, and why trust remains the guiding word of his life.
— What inspired you to establish this award for young talents?
— My childhood fell on difficult times. I was born in 1935, when the country was recovering from war and people had neither stability nor comfort. I entered school only at fifteen, in my native village of Kyrgyz-Ata, and within three years completed the full program, catching up with my peers. Later, I received the prestigious Stalin Scholarship — a turning point that taught me how education can transform a life. I am not a wealthy man, but when there is a goal, there is always a way to achieve it.
— Do you have a personal story connected to talent, education, or youth support?
— Yes. On my third year of studies, I received the Stalin Scholarship — 76 rubles a month, a considerable amount then, roughly equal to ten thousand soms today. It allowed me to focus entirely on my studies and inspired many others to do the same. That early support shaped the course of my life — and the lives of many who later became scientists and educators.
— What goal do you pursue through this scholarship?
— Not fame, but contribution. My aim is to help develop Kyrgyzstan by encouraging young people to learn, grow, and believe in themselves. If even one student finds the strength to realize their potential, it means my mission was fulfilled.
— Which fields of talent are most important to you?
— All of them. Whether science, medicine, sports, business, or art — every field has its purpose and value. Every genuine effort benefits society.
— How does this scholarship help society as a whole?
— It creates healthy competition and interest in knowledge. When students see that success is achievable, they begin to strive harder. Those who receive the award inspire others — and that is the true purpose of this initiative.
— How are the winners selected?
— The scholarship is awarded to students from the third year onward. Each October, a competition is announced, and a special commission of professors and students at Osh State University selects the most deserving candidates. The rector presents the awards personally.
— Do you have partners or organizations assisting with the process?
— No. This is my personal initiative, funded entirely by my own savings — my salary, pension, and deposits accumulated over thirty years. The selection, however, is collective and transparent, ensuring fairness and trust.
— Is the award annual?
— Yes. It has existed since 2012 and, since 2019, has been issued through Bank Kompanion. My wish is for it to continue even after me — to remain as a living tradition that supports students and inspires others to give back.
— Why did you choose Bank Kompanion as your financial partner?
— I’ve worked with many banks, but Kompanion Bank stood out. Here, everything is respectful, reliable, and professional. I found not just order, but humanity — and that’s why I stayed.
— What qualities of the Bank were decisive for you?
— Precision and transparency. Every promise in the contract is honored. The service is excellent, and the employees are attentive and polite. For me, that is not merely convenience — it is culture and trust.
— How has cooperation with Bank Kompanion helped you realize your initiatives?
— It has made everything easier. Previously, I had to withdraw cash and personally hand it to students. Now, after the commission’s decision, each winner receives a bank card, and funds are transferred automatically every month. It’s simple, safe, and modern — just as it should be.
I also help children from low-income families in my home village — six pupils each year receive assistance. This is my personal commitment.
— What future do you envision for this scholarship?
— I hope it will continue to nurture future scientists and educators. My dream is to establish a separate award for those who dedicate their lives to research. When one generation helps the next, that’s when true legacy begins.
