Bank warns: increase in WhatsApp account hacks and fraud cases
Fraudsters gain access to accounts and then message the victim’s contacts, asking for money on their behalf.
How to protect your account:
Enable two-step verification (2FA) in WhatsApp settings
Set a PIN (at least 6 digits) and link a recovery email
Never share SMS codes with anyone, even if the message appears to be from a friend or “support”
Do not click on suspicious links or open unknown files
Keep the app updated to the latest version
If your WhatsApp account has been hacked, act quickly and follow these steps:
1. Restore access immediately
• Open WhatsApp and enter your phone number
• Verify it using the SMS code
This will automatically log the мошенники out of your account
2. If a PIN is requested (two-step verification)
Enter your PIN if you remember it
If not → tap “Forgot PIN?” and recover via email (if it was linked)
If no email was linked — you will need to wait 7 days
3. Inform your contacts
Send a message (or use other social networks/calls):
“My WhatsApp has been hacked. Please do not send money or click any links.”
4. Enable protection
After regaining access:
Go to Settings → Account → Two-step verification
Set a PIN and add an email
5. Check your device
Scan your phone with antivirus
Remove suspicious apps
Check WhatsApp Web:
Settings → Linked devices → Log out from all
6. If you cannot log in
Contact WhatsApp support:
Provide your number in this format: +996XXXXXXXXX
Example:
"My WhatsApp account has been hacked. Please deactivate my account."
7. Important
Never share your SMS code with anyone
